Coraline Leseurre

Post-doc researcher

Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ)

Bonjour! I’m a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) in Oostende, where I study air-sea exchanges of the three main greenhouse gases: carbon dioxide (COâ‚‚), methane (CHâ‚„) and nitrous oxide (Nâ‚‚O), in the Arctic Ocean, especially in the fjords of Greenland and the Svalbard archipelago.

I did my PhD at Sorbonne Université (LOCEAN, Paris), working on the mechanisms controlling anthropogenic COâ‚‚ uptake and ocean acidification in the North Atlantic and Southern Ocean. During that time, I had the chance to join several oceanographic cruises around the French sub-Antarctic islands, (do you know Kerguelen Island?), which is where I had my very first adventures at high southern latitudes.

I love talking about climate change, particularly in the fascinating polar regions of the Arctic and Antarctic. I’ve been involved with APECS since 2023 and really enjoyed helping organizing Be Polar Day 2024 and the Be Polar Conference 2025. These events bring together the whole Belgian polar community, which is remarkably large given Belgium’s size!

Now, as co-chair of APECS Belgium, I’m excited to keep supporting this community and to keep sharing polar science and climate knowledge with as many people as possible.
